How to Make a Good First Impression

Have you ever met someone and walked away with “yuck” or “loser” in mind? Are you afraid of being that someone and having others not like or understand you? Well, let your worries and fears fade by learning how to make a great and lasting first impression on people using the following steps:

1. Be confident and outgoing. When a person realizes someone has those qualities, they find them easier to talk with and much more welcoming.

2. Proper posture is imperative. Body language can tell someone a lot about your mood and confidence level. Slouching is a no-no as it gives the impression of insecurity and defeat. You must always stand straight and tall, possibly with a hand on your hip, if you want to convey to someone that you are a strong, confident, deserving individual.

3. Never fidget. Keep your hands to your side or in your lap. Never bite your fingernails, twirl your hair or crumple a napkin in your hand.

4. Relax. Posture is very important, but you don’t want to look like a robot, either. Sit up straight, but don’t be so rigid that you’d fall over if pushed. It’s like when people say that an animal can smell your fear; people can tell if you’re nervous. Just be yourself. Don’t try to impress someone, let your real personality do the work.

5. Smile. Especially when first meeting someone. It’s not necessary to show your teeth, just a meaningful grin will do. Be careful not to transition from a smile to a straight face too quickly, or people will sense you’re being fake or that you don’t like them.

6. Make eye contact. Stay focused on the person you are speaking with and certainly not on anything else to avoid them feeling unappreciated and unwanted.

7. Dress appropriately. Always be genuine and show your unique personality. Try to be in style so others will see you are modern and up-to-date. Go on-line and look up the latest trends or pick up a fashion magazine.

8. Sense of Humor. People who try to be funny are NOT funny. Truly funny people are just themselves and the wittiness shows. Don’t use lame jokes or lines.

9. Be Interesting. Use some common sense when speaking. Most ladies aren’t going to be interested in Bif standing there talking about his last fight in the bar or how many beers he can drink. Similarly, most guys aren’t going to want to listen to stories about cute things your puppy did or how much you like shoes. You’re trying to attract the other person. Intrigue them. Keep them interested.

10. Go easy on the perfume or cologne. This is self-explanatory. Remember the famous saying “a little bit goes a long way” rather than “too much is never enough”. You may love the scent you are wearing; however, it could easily offend others or cause a reaction to their allergies, if applicable. In this regard, it is probably better to wear none at all or, if you must, then spray it into a distance and wait a few seconds before walking through the sprayed area.

11. Use good hygiene. This is super important, especially for teens. This may seem overly basic, but always shower daily and wear clean, fresh clothes. Also equally important, you should brush your teeth twice daily and be sure to wear deodorant and/or anti-perspirant, if needed, especially if you’re meeting someone important who is likely to make you nervous.

12. Close on a Good Note. Keep them wanting more. Show that you had a really good time and would like to see them again. Maybe even text them saying so when you get home. People on a first date not only want to have a good time, but they want to know that you did as well. They want that reassurance

 How is Blackle saving energy?

Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. “Image displayed is primarily a function of the user’s color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen.” Roberson et al, 2002

In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages.

We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy.

How can you help?

We encourage you to set Blackle as your home page. This way every time you load your Internet browser you will save a little bit of energy. Remember every bit counts! You will also be reminded about the need to save energy each time you see the Blackle page load.

Help us spread the word about Blackle by telling your friends and family to set it as their home page. If you have a blog then give us a mention. Or put the following text in your email signature: “Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time”.

Have a look at our energy saving tips page for ideas on steps you can take to save energy or you can follow Blackle on Twitter and we will keep you updated with simple energy saving tips.

There are a lot of great web sites about saving energy and being more environmentally friendly. They are full of great tips covering the little things that we can all do to make a difference today. Try Blackling “energy saving tips” or visit one of the many great blogs dedicated to environmental awareness.

Blueberries for Health

Research labs across the world demonstrate that there is growing evidence proving blueberries are an important part of a healthy diet.

Blueberries and Antioxidant Activity

Antioxidants are thought to help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. Fresh fruits, including blueberries, and vegetables contain many of these naturally occurring antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.  Blueberries contain 14 mg of Vitamin C and 0.8 mg Vitamin E per 1 cup of blueberries.  In addition, blueberries contain anthocyanins and phenolics that can also act as antioxidants.  Based on data from the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging (Boston, MA), blueberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant activity.  Using a test called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), researchers have shown that a serving of fresh blueberries provides more antioxidant activity than many other fresh fruits and vegetables.  Read a research excerpt on the antioxidant activity of blueberries.

Blueberries and Aging

In a USDA Human Nutrition Research Center laboratory, neuroscientists discovered that feeding blueberries to laboratory rats slowed age-related loss in their mental capacity, a finding that has important implications for humans

In one study, Jim Joseph, director of the neuroscience laboratory in the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center (HNRC), fed blueberry extractions—the equivalent of a human eating one cup of blueberries a day—to mice and then ran them through a series of motor skills tests.

He found that the blueberry-fed mice performed better than their control group counterparts in motor behavioral learning and memory, and he noticed an increase in exploratory behavior. When he examined their brains, he found a marked decrease in oxidative stress in two regions of the brain and better retention of signal-transmitting neurons compared with the control mice.

The compound that appears responsible for this neuron protection, anthocyanin, also gives blueberries their color and might be the key component of the blueberry’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Blueberries, along with other colorful fruits and vegetables, test high in their ability to subdue free radicals. These free radicals, which can damage cell membranes and DNA through a process known as oxidative stress, are blamed for many of the dysfunctions and diseases associated with aging.

These findings could become increasingly important as the U.S. population ages. It is projected that by 2050, more than 30% of Americans will be over 65 and will have the decreased cognitive and motor function that accompanies advanced age. Joseph is currently testing the effects of blueberries on humans. Preliminary results show that people who ate a cup of blueberries a day have performed 5–6% better on motor skills tests than the control group.  Read research excerpts on blueberries and aging.

Blueberries and Health

Researchers at Rutgers University in New Jersey have identified compounds in blueberries called proanthocyanidins that promote urinary tract health and reduce the risk of infection by preventing bacteria from adhering to the cells that line the walls of the urinary tract.  Read the full health research excerpts.

How to Motivate Yourself

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 @ 04:12 PM
Author: admin

STEPS

1. Think through a set of goals that sound like what you want, and try to be specific. The key to most motivation remains setting goals, but you can’t just pick any goals.

2. Make it general. Let’s say you want a Corvette specifically, are you really saying you want a new car, or maybe just a car you can stop worrying about? Getting yourself to a reliable car is a goal that is easier to achieve and accomplishes the need you had from the get go. This is not copping out–no one needs a Corvette.

3. Do this with all of the goals you have, do not simply pick ones that sound good like most people pick New Year’s resolutions. If the goals you set for yourself make your life easier or more rewarding, they are probably the type you need to focus on.

4. Cut pictures out of the car that you want, or the TV, stereo, golf clubs, whatever you are aiming for, and put them up somewhere you can see them every day. On the fridge door, or on the wall next to the computer. When you look say “That’s my car” or “That’s my TV”. Visualizing these items as yours will help keep you motivated.

5. Anyone who has had serious issues with motivation knows that someone telling you to “stay motivated” is a bit daft, since you weren’t in a motivated state to begin with, and as such, is hard to stay in. However anyone can get themselves motivated.

6. Make your goals in the very beginning small. If you write out a long list of things that are really valuable for you to do, and then you mess one up, you’re going back to starting at zero and you will likely feel pretty badly. Instead make a list for each day, and at first, only put down maybe 3 or 4 things, a set of activities that might take you 2 or 3 hours.

7. If you can do that, then a week later start adding things in about an hour at a time and build up. It’s like doing pushups in the Army, the first day you get there and feel terrible because you can’t keep up with the physical training, but you build up to it. Goals and mental attitudes are the same way. You have to make it a series of small steps. Don’t set yourself up for failure by reaching too high at first. You can always reach higher the next week. There’s no limit here, so pace yourself.

8. Rely upon yourself for the motivation and the drive. Other people do not have and will never have the same vested interest in your success. Motivation and success is a function of habit. You must break your bad habit of procrastination, and replace it with one of good planning. The most successful people in the world aren’t always the brightest, or the best looking, but no matter what other talents or gifts they have been blessed with, they have underpinning their self esteem a series of victories over tasks both large and small. This is how you learn anything in school, gain confidence dating, and everything else in life.

9. Don’t just think that you’re the best, prove it to yourself. Your opinion matters the most in your own motivation, but you know when you’re pulling your own leg as to your accomplishments. It’s far easier to just start dealing with your responsibilities and knowing, with an incredibly strong epistemic justification (by which I mean, you KNOW this) that you can handle what comes up because you have before, than trying to know you can tackle it because you’re all warm and fuzzy inside. Warm and fuzzy accomplishes very little, but neither does beating yourself up.

10. Reward yourself when you complete a part of your task, your mind will recognise this and you will want to do whatever you did to give yourself a treat more.

11. Get back up if you fall. Start again. Start where you are comfortable. Getting back up to try again, no matter how small that task, goal, activity, errand, or whim; If you can complete it, you are already back on your way. Get up, don’t look back. Cheers!
